How it is used
Natural gas is mostly methane and needs a different gas-to-air ratio from bottled LPG, so the burner is built with its own needle valve to meter the gas and a mixing tube that sets the air. On this model the heavy gauge mixing tube is threaded into the base: screwing it up or down opens or closes the air entry at the bottom of the tube. Turning the tube therefore moves the flame from a yellow, luminous flame to a blue, non-luminous one without touching the gas setting.
Because the air adjustment is made on a solid threaded tube rather than a loose collar, it holds its setting between uses. The heavy die-cast zinc alloy base lowers the centre of gravity, which reduces the risk of the burner tipping when tubing is pulled or a tripod is moved around it.
- Connect the burner to the natural gas tap with suitable burner tubing.
- Screw the mixing tube down to reduce the air, open the needle valve slightly and light the gas.
- Turn the mixing tube to admit air until the flame is blue with a clear inner cone.
- Set the flame height with the needle valve and place the vessel on a tripod and gauze above it.
