How the high temperature burner works
An ordinary Bunsen burner relies on the gas jet to draw room air in through its air holes, so the amount of air mixed with the fuel is limited. The High Temperature Burner instead takes compressed air straight into an injector-shaped venturi tube, where it is mixed with gas metered by a micrometer needle valve. With more air available, combustion is more complete and the burner gives a short, broad flame that is hot across its whole width rather than only at the tip of an inner cone.
This makes it suitable for work that needs a large volume of heat in a small space: bringing a crucible to a high temperature, heating a wide-bottomed vessel evenly, or bending and working glass tubing in a teaching laboratory.
- Stand the burner on its octagonal base on a heat-resistant bench surface, away from flammable material.
- Connect the gas supply and the compressed-air line to their inlets; set the air supply to about 5 PSI.
- Open the micrometer needle valve a little and light the gas at the top of the tube.
