How the block heater is used
A dry block heater replaces the water bath for small-volume work. The heater warms an aluminium block drilled to fit a particular tube size; because aluminium conducts heat well and each tube sits in close contact with the metal, the tubes in the block reach the set temperature evenly. There is no water to top up, spill or contaminate the samples, and no open flame near solvents.
Typical uses are incubating microtubes for enzyme digests and molecular biology steps, holding culture tubes at a steady temperature, warming reagents before an assay and gently heating reaction tubes in chemistry practicals. The well takes either one large block or two smaller ones, so two tube sizes can be run side by side.
- Fit the accessory block for the tube size in use, or two smaller blocks side by side.
- Set the required temperature on the analogue dial and allow the block to reach it.
- Place the tubes in the block wells.
- After use, let the block cool and lift it out with the block extraction tool.
