How the Meker burner is used
The Meker burner is the high-temperature gas burner of the laboratory. Gas and a generous supply of air mix in the tube and burn over a grid at the top, which splits the flame into many small cones sitting side by side. The result is a flame that is hot across its full width, without the cooler inner zone of an ordinary Bunsen flame, so a crucible or dish placed over it is heated evenly from below.
Having both a gas regulator and an air regulator on the burner means the flame can be tuned without going back to the bench tap: the gas regulator sets the size of the flame, and the air regulator sets how hot and blue it burns. The one-piece die-cast base keeps the burner steady under a tripod or stand. Typical uses include ignition of precipitates in gravimetric analysis, heating crucibles to constant mass, simple fusions and heating small metal specimens.
- Connect the burner to the gas tap with a burner tube.
- Close the air regulator, open the gas regulator a little and light the burner.
- Open the air regulator until the grid shows an even bed of small blue flames.
- Adjust the gas regulator for the flame size needed and place the crucible or vessel on a support above the grid.
- Shut off the gas at the tap after use.
