How the Meker burner gives a hotter flame
A Bunsen flame has one large inner cone, and the hottest zone is a small region just above its tip. The Meker design widens the top of the venturi tube and covers it with a metal grid. Air drawn into the wide venturi mixes thoroughly with the gas, and the grid splits the mixture into many small jets, each burning as its own short blue cone. The whole area above the grid is then close to the hottest part of the flame, so the burner delivers a flat, uniformly hot flame across its width.
The honeycombed grid on this burner is made of monel, a nickel-copper alloy that withstands the flame without scaling quickly. The result is a flame suitable for heating platinum wire, igniting precipitates in crucibles and other work that needs more heat than an ordinary Bunsen burner can supply.
