How the Meker burner works
A Meker burner is a development of the Bunsen burner. Gas enters at the base and draws in air as it rises through the tube, but instead of leaving through an open top it passes through a perforated mesh plate. The plate splits the gas-air mixture into many small flames, each with its own tiny inner cone, and together they form a short, broad flame that is hot across its whole width rather than only at the tip of one cone.
That even, hot flame is useful for heating crucibles to constant mass in gravimetric work, igniting precipitates, heating evaporating basins and warming the bottom of a vessel without a single hot spot. The economy model keeps the essentials of the design, the mesh plate and a nickel-plated tube on a cast base, for everyday use.
- Connect the 10 mm inlet to the gas tap with a burner tube.
- Open the gas tap and light the burner at the mesh plate.
- Adjust the gas until the plate shows an even bed of small blue flames.
- Place the crucible or vessel on a pipeclay triangle or gauze above the plate.
- Turn off the gas at the tap after use and let the burner cool.
