How the pilot flame burner is used
Many practicals need heat only now and then: a few seconds to sterilise a wire loop, then a pause; a short burst to warm a tube, then observation. Leaving a full Bunsen flame burning between steps wastes gas and leaves a large flame on the bench, while relighting each time is slow. With the pilot flame, a small flame burns continuously from the pilot tube, and when the main gas is opened again with the stopcock the burner lights from it at once.
The pilot is set with its own screw adjustment so that it stays small and steady. As on any Bunsen burner, the sleeve-type regulator opens or closes the air holes: closed, it gives a yellow, luminous flame that is easy to see; open, it gives the hot blue flame with a clear inner cone used for heating.
