How the Bunsen burner is used
In a Bunsen burner, gas leaves a small nozzle at the base of the barrel at speed and draws air in through the air inlets. Gas and air mix as they rise and burn at the top. With the air inlets closed the flame is yellow, luminous and sooty because the fuel burns incompletely; with them open the flame becomes blue and non-luminous, with a pale inner cone of unburnt mixture and a hotter outer zone just above its tip.
