How it is used
As in any pulse oximeter, the probe passes red and infrared light through tissue and compares how much of each is absorbed by oxygenated and deoxygenated haemoglobin, which gives SpO2 and pulse rate. This handheld unit also derives the breathing rate, so the three observations most used in assessing a sick child or adult appear on one screen.
An SpO2 below 90% is the usual clinical threshold for hypoxaemia, and the display flags it. Entering the patient's age group lets the monitor show the normal respiratory rate for that group as a reference, which helps in paediatric assessment, where normal breathing rates change with age.
- Charge the Li-ion battery and switch on the monitor.
