How it is used
In electrolysis a direct current is passed through an electrolyte between two electrodes: the cathode, joined to the negative terminal, where positive ions gain electrons, and the anode, joined to the positive terminal, where negative ions lose electrons. Electrolysing copper(II) chloride solution, for example, deposits copper on the cathode and releases chlorine at the anode.
Round electrodes of a standard 6-7 mm diameter make it easy to build these circuits from parts that fit together. Pushed through a rubber stopper with a hole, they seal into a test tube or cell; held in the electrode holder, they stand upright in a beaker; and the electrode connector provides the electrical connection.
- Fit two electrodes in the electrode holder or through a bored rubber stopper.
- Place them in the electrolyte so that they do not touch each other.
- Join them to a low-voltage DC supply, noting which is the cathode (negative) and which is the anode (positive).
- Switch on and observe the products forming at each electrode.
