How it is used
Carbon (graphite) is the usual electrode material for school electrolysis because it conducts well and is inert: it takes no part in the reaction, so the products seen at each electrode come from the electrolyte alone. Electrolysing copper(II) chloride solution between carbon electrodes, for example, deposits copper at the cathode and releases chlorine at the anode.
The S shape removes the need for stands, clamps or stoppers. Each electrode hooks over the rim of the beaker with its carbon tip in the solution, and the insulation on the brass keeps the metal out of the electrolyte so only the carbon conducts into the solution.
- Pour the electrolyte into a beaker.
- Hang one electrode over each side of the rim so that the carbon tips dip into the solution without touching.
- Clip a 4 mm lead with a crocodile clip onto the bare contact at the top of each electrode.
- Connect the leads to a low-voltage DC supply and observe the products at each electrode.
After use, rinse the carbon tips with water; any metal deposited on the cathode can be wiped off before the next run.
