Student Gas Voltameter

Student Gas Voltameter

Product Code : EL-E-10978

Quick answer: The Student Gas Voltameter is a compact electrolysis apparatus with embedded platinum electrodes, connected through 4 mm sockets, and two miniature test tubes to collect the gases. Students use it at their benches to electrolyse water and compare the volumes of hydrogen and oxygen produced. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for schools, colleges and universities.

How the electrolysis experiment is done

Platinum is used for the electrodes because it is inert: it does not dissolve or react during electrolysis, so the gases collected come only from the electrolyte. With dilute sulfuric acid or sodium sulfate solution as the electrolyte, hydrogen forms at the cathode and oxygen at the anode, and the gas over the cathode takes up about twice the volume of the gas over the anode.

Being small and simple, the student voltameter lets each pair of students run its own electrolysis, collect both gases and test them, rather than watching a single demonstration at the front of the room.

  1. Fill the voltameter with the electrolyte.
  2. Fill the two miniature test tubes with the same solution and invert one over each electrode.
  3. Connect a low-voltage DC supply to the 4 mm sockets and switch on.
  4. Compare the volumes of gas in the two tubes as they fill.
  5. Test the gases: hydrogen gives a squeaky pop with a lighted splint and oxygen relights a glowing splint.
