How the model is used in teaching
In cross-section the spinal cord shows butterfly-shaped grey matter, made of nerve cell bodies, surrounded by white matter, made of nerve fibres running up and down the cord. A deep anterior fissure and a shallow posterior sulcus divide the cord into left and right halves.
Each spinal nerve joins the cord by two roots: the dorsal root carries sensory fibres in from the body and bears a swelling, the dorsal root ganglion, which holds the sensory cell bodies, while the ventral root carries motor fibres out to the muscles. The second model lets students follow this arrangement, which is the basis for explaining the reflex arc.
