How the model is used in teaching
The three nasal conchae are curled shelves of bone covered with mucous membrane. They increase the surface area of the nasal cavity and make the airflow turbulent, so inhaled air is warmed, moistened and cleaned before it reaches the lungs. Below each concha lies a passage, the meatus, into which the paranasal sinuses and the tear duct drain.
The frontal, sphenoid and maxillary sinuses are air-filled spaces in the skull bones around the nose. The model lets students see their position relative to the nasal cavity, which helps explain why sinus infection often follows a cold, while the section through the external nose shows where bone ends and cartilage begins.
