How the model is used in teaching
Sound waves travel down the auditory canal and make the tympanic membrane (eardrum) vibrate. The vibration passes along the three ear ossicles, malleus, incus and stapes, which amplify it and deliver it to the oval window of the cochlea in the inner ear, where it is converted into nerve impulses carried to the brain.
Removing the eardrum with the malleus and incus, and then the temporal bone section, lets students follow this path step by step on an enlarged scale, while the numbered parts and key card support labelling exercises and practical tests.
