How the model is used in teaching
Smell begins in a small patch of olfactory epithelium high in the nasal cavity. Odour molecules dissolve in the mucus there and bind to receptors on olfactory nerve cells, whose fibres pass up through the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone to the olfactory bulb and on to the brain. The enlarged model lets a teacher show where this region lies in relation to the nostrils and the rest of the nose.
It is used in lessons on the sense organs in secondary biology and in nursing and ENT anatomy, and pairs with the plain nose model when the breathing role and the sensory role of the nose are taught separately.
