How it is used
Where a needle would pierce and a scalpel would cut, a seeker pushes tissue aside. Its blunt end slides along a blood vessel, nerve or duct and frees it from the surrounding connective tissue, so the structure can be followed to its origin and its branches seen. It is also used to lift an organ gently to look underneath it, or to point out parts during a demonstration.
The bent seeker reaches around and under structures, while the straight seeker suits general probing along the surface.
- Locate the vessel or nerve to be traced and hold the tissue beside it with forceps.
- Run the blunt end of the seeker along the structure, separating it from the tissue around it.
- Follow the structure to its branches, using the bent seeker to lift it where needed.
- Wash and dry the seeker after the practical.
