How it is used
A mounted needle is the simplest dissecting tool and one of the most used. Its sharp point teases apart fibres and tissue layers, lifts membranes, picks out small structures such as anthers or ovules, and holds a specimen still while it is cut. In slide work it spreads material in a drop of water and lowers a cover slip without trapping air.
The needle forms suit different jobs: the straight needle for general probing, the bent needle for reaching under a structure and lifting it, and the arrow-head needle, with its flat pointed tip, for lifting and turning thin tissue and sections.
