How each speculum is used
The Sims speculum is a double-ended instrument with a blade at each end: one blade is inserted to retract the posterior vaginal wall, usually with the patient in the Sims (left lateral) position. The Cusco and Graves are bivalve specula whose two blades open to hold the vaginal walls apart and bring the cervix into view for examination and for procedures such as taking a cervical smear; the Graves has broader blades than the Cusco. The nasal speculum opens the nostril for inspection of the nasal cavity and septum.
In medical, nursing and midwifery teaching, specula are used on pelvic and ENT training models to practise insertion, positioning and examination technique before clinical placements.
