How the razor is used for hand sections

Cutting a transverse section (T.S.) of a stem or root by hand is a standard practical in plant anatomy. The flat face of the blade is kept against the cut surface of the material, which lets the razor travel in a level plane and take off slices thin enough for light to pass through under a compound microscope. The same razor is used in animal dissection wherever a clean slice is needed rather than the snipping action of scissors.

  1. Hold the plant material upright between thumb and forefinger, supported in a piece of pith or potato if it is thin.
  2. Wet the blade and the top of the material with water.
  3. Draw the razor across the top in one smooth, slanting stroke with the flat side towards the material.
  4. Move the thinnest sections to a watch glass of water with a brush, then stain and mount the best one on a slide.
