How it is used
A detachable scalpel has two parts: a reusable handle and a disposable blade. The handle carries a slotted fitting, and the blade has a matching slot that slides onto it and locks in place. Keeping the handle and replacing only the blade gives a consistently sharp edge at low running cost.
Blade numbers are grouped by handle size. The smaller No. 3 handle takes the finer blades numbered 10 to 15, used for precise incisions and delicate dissection, while the No. 4 handle takes the larger blades numbered 20 to 25 for longer cuts through bigger specimens.
- Hold the handle with the fitting uppermost and grip the blade with forceps or a needle holder, never with the fingers.
- Slide the blade slot onto the fitting until it clicks into place.
- To remove it, lift the heel of the blade with the forceps and slide it forward off the fitting into a sharps container.
- Wash and dry the handle before storing it.
