How it is used

An awl is made for pressure rather than fine teasing. Its spike pierces skin, cartilage, shell or thick plant tissue where a fine needle would bend, and it makes a small starter hole so that the point of the scissors can enter cleanly. It is also used to punch holes in card or cork when mounting specimens.

The wooden handle gives a firm grip for pushing steadily along the line of the spike.

  1. Hold the specimen firmly on a dissecting board, with the hand away from the point.
  2. Place the tip where the opening is needed and press straight down with steady force.
  3. Enlarge the opening with scissors or a scalpel as required.
  4. Clean and dry the spike after use.
