How it is used
A full dissection often ends at the microscope: a part is cut out, a thin section is taken with the razor, lifted with the section lifter into a watch glass of water or stain, and then transferred to a slide under a cover slip. The large set holds everything for that sequence, so students do not need to borrow glassware from another bench.
The three needle types each have a role: the arrow-head needle lifts and teases membranes, the pointed steel needle picks out fine parts, and the needle with plastic handle is used for general probing. The blow pipe inflates hollow organs so they can be traced, and the drawing pins hold flaps of tissue open on the dissecting board.
- Pin the specimen out with the drawing pins and open it with the sharp-blunt scissors.
- Separate organs with the seeker and needles, using the forceps to lift them.
- Cut a thin section with the razor, float it in the watch glass and lift it with the section lifter.
- Mount the section on the slide with a drop from the dropper, cover it and view it.
