How dissecting pins are used
In a school or college dissection the specimen is laid on a soft surface and fixed with pins so that it cannot slide while it is being opened. Once the body wall is cut, more pins hold the flaps of skin and muscle back, keeping the organs exposed for observation, labelling and drawing. The same pins are used on wax-lined dishes, where they push straight into the wax.
- Place the specimen on the dissecting board in the position given in the practical sheet.
- Push the pins in at a slant, heads leaning away from the specimen, so they do not get in the way of scissors or forceps.
- After each incision, pin back the cut flaps to keep the internal organs in view.
- At the end of the practical, remove the pins, wash and dry them, and store them sorted by length and material.
