How dissecting dishes are used
A dish with a wax layer is the usual choice for soft-bodied specimens such as earthworms or cockroaches: the specimen is pinned directly into the wax and, where the practical calls for it, covered with water so that delicate internal organs float apart and are easier to trace. The plain dish without wax works as a tray for holding specimens, instruments or tissues removed during the practical.
Stainless steel stands up to washing after every class, and the flanged rim gives a firm edge for lifting and carrying the dish, even when it holds water.
