How the periscope works
A simple periscope has two plane mirrors, one at each end of a tube, each set at 45 degrees and parallel to the other. Light from the object strikes the top mirror and is turned through 90 degrees down the tube; the lower mirror turns it through 90 degrees again into the eye. The observer therefore sees the object as if looking straight at it, though the eye is well below the line of sight.
Because the light is reflected twice, the image is upright and not laterally inverted, a useful point for comparing single and double reflection in class.
