Optical Bench Single Rod

Optical Bench Single Rod

Product Code : SCL-LAO-11136

Quick answer: The Optical Bench Single Rod is a linear support on which an object, lens or mirror and a screen are lined up along one optical axis, so that object and image distances can be measured. It is used to find the focal length of convex lenses and to study real image formation. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for schools, colleges and universities.

How the focal length experiment is done

An optical bench keeps every component on the same straight line, so that the object, the lens and the image lie on the principal axis. Moving the components along the rod changes the object distance u and the image distance v while keeping them aligned, which is what makes the readings meaningful.

For a convex lens, the image of a lit object is focused on a screen, u and v are measured, and f is found from 1/f = 1/v - 1/u. Plotting 1/v against 1/u from several readings gives a more reliable focal length than a single measurement.

  1. Set the bench on a stable, level surface.
  2. Fit the holders or riders for the object, lens and screen.
  3. Place the light source or object at one end and mount the lens in its holder.
  4. Move the screen until a sharp image forms and note the positions of all three.
  5. Repeat for different object distances and calculate f for each.

Key features

  • Single-rod configuration gives a defined linear path for components.
  • Keeps the light source, lens or mirror and screen on a common axis.
  • Supports focal length experiments with convex and concave lenses.
  • Allows real image formation to be observed and measured.
  • Components can be repositioned along the rod for each reading.

Documentation and supply

Installation instructions and a manual are supplied with the apparatus. Most Lab Exports products carry a one-year manufacturer warranty.

Lab Exports manufactures the single rod optical bench at its works in Laxmi Nagar, Delhi, and supplies it to schools, colleges and universities in India and 60+ countries, handling the export documents for each shipment. More about the company is on the About Lab Exports page.
