Acrylic Prism

Acrylic Prism

Product Code : EL-LAO-10340

Quick answer: The Acrylic Prism is a set of three highly polished acrylic equilateral prisms, 25, 50 and 100 mm long with 25 mm faces, used to show refraction and to split white light from any standard light source into a spectrum of colours. The prisms are also used for rainbow lighting effects in photography. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for schools, colleges and universities.

How it is used

White light is a mixture of wavelengths, and the refractive index of a transparent material is slightly greater for violet light than for red. A prism therefore bends each colour by a different amount, spreading a narrow beam into a spectrum from red to violet. Acrylic has a refractive index of about 1.49, close to that of ordinary glass, so it gives a clear demonstration of refraction and dispersion with a lamp or sunlight.

  1. Pass a narrow beam of white light from a ray box, or from a slit in front of a lamp, onto one face of the prism.
  2. Turn the prism until the emerging beam spreads into colours and catch it on a white screen.
  3. Note the order of the colours and which colour is deviated most.
  4. Repeat with the other prisms of the set and compare the spectra.

The same prisms can be used for the pin method of finding the angle of deviation, giving each group in a class its own prism.

Frequently asked questions

What is included in the acrylic prism set?

Three equilateral prisms of highly polished acrylic, 25 mm, 50 mm and 100 mm long, each with 25 mm faces.

Why does an acrylic prism split white light into colours?

The refractive index of acrylic is slightly different for each wavelength, so violet light is bent more than red and the colours separate into a spectrum.
