How the vernier caliper experiment is done
The vernier scale lets the caliper read a fraction of the smallest main-scale division. The least count is the difference between one main-scale division and one vernier-scale division, LC = 1 MSD - 1 VSD, which equals one main-scale division divided by the number of vernier divisions. A reading is the main-scale reading plus the coinciding vernier division multiplied by the least count, corrected for any zero error.
- Find the least count from the main-scale and vernier-scale divisions.
- Close the jaws and check the zero error: note whether the vernier zero lies to the right (positive) or left (negative) of the main-scale zero.
- Place the object between the outside jaws, or the inside jaws for a hole, and slide the jaw to light contact.
- Read the main scale just before the vernier zero and find the vernier division that lines up exactly with a main-scale mark.
- Total reading = MSR + (VSD x LC), minus the zero error; repeat at different positions and average.
