How it is used
A galvanometer works on the motor effect: current in a coil suspended in a radial magnetic field produces a torque that turns the coil against a control spring, and the deflection of the pointer is proportional to the current. Because the movement is very sensitive, the galvanometer is used both to detect whether any current flows and to measure small currents directly.
In school and college practicals it serves as the null detector in the meter bridge, Wheatstone bridge and potentiometer experiments, where balance is found when the galvanometer shows no deflection. It is also the starting point for the classic exercise of converting a galvanometer into an ammeter with a low-value shunt, S = Ig G / (I - Ig), or into a voltmeter with a high series resistance, R = V / Ig - G.
