How the ohm meter is used
An ohm meter carries its own source - here a 1.5 V AA cell - which drives a small current through the resistance under test. The meter responds to that current: a low resistance lets more current flow and a high resistance less, so the scale can be marked directly in ohms. Because the meter supplies its own current, the component must always be disconnected from any other power source before it is measured.
- Fit a fresh 1.5 V AA cell.
- Switch off and disconnect the circuit or component to be tested.
- Touch the test leads together and check the zero reading.
- Connect the leads across the resistor and read the resistance from the scale.
