Solar Water Heater Model

Solar Water Heater Model

Product Code : SCL-H-11133

Quick answer: The Solar Water Heater Model is a single demonstration unit that shows how a solar collector converts radiation into heat and passes it to water. Students see the principle of solar water heating and the role of absorption and convection in moving warm water. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for schools, colleges and STEM labs.

How the model is used in teaching

A solar water heater has a collector that absorbs sunlight and a container of water that the collected heat is passed to. In the collector, radiation is absorbed by a dark surface and conducted into the water in contact with it. Warmed water is less dense, so it rises towards the container while cooler water sinks to take its place - a natural circulation called the thermosiphon effect, and a direct classroom example of convection.

  1. Place the model securely on a stable surface in sunlight or under a suitable lamp.
  2. Inspect the collector, water path, container and connections, and fill with water as the supplied configuration directs.
  3. Note the starting water temperature.
  4. Leave the collector exposed and record the water temperature at regular intervals.
  5. Discuss where heat is absorbed, how it moves into the water and how the warm water circulates.

Set beside the Solar Cooker Model, it shows two uses of the same solar thermal principle: one traps heat in an enclosed chamber, the other carries it away in water for later use.
