How the model is used in teaching
A two-stroke diesel completes its cycle in one turn of the crankshaft. As the piston rises it compresses air alone to a high pressure, heating it enough for injected fuel to ignite without a spark. The expanding gas drives the piston down; near the bottom of the stroke the exhaust is released and fresh air enters through the ports to sweep out the burnt gas, a process called scavenging. There are no inlet valves, which is what separates it from a valve-operated four-stroke engine.
- Set the model firmly on a level table or laboratory desk.
- Connect a low-voltage supply to the model terminals to power the ignition light.
- Turn the hand wheel slowly and watch the piston uncover the transfer and exhaust ports on the downstroke.
- Keep turning and note that the light flashes as the piston nears the top of its compression stroke.
- Name each part as it moves: piston, connecting rod, wrist pin and counterweighted crankshaft.
