Copper Calorimeter
Product Code : SCL-H-11208
Quick answer: The Copper Calorimeter is a double-walled vessel for heat experiments such as specific heat by the method of mixtures and latent heat of fusion. A polished copper inner vessel sits inside an insulated outer vessel, with a lid carrying openings for a thermometer and a wire loop stirrer. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for schools, colleges and universities.

How the copper calorimeter is used
Copper is chosen for the inner vessel because it conducts heat quickly, so the vessel reaches the temperature of its contents almost at once, and its specific heat capacity (about 0.39 J per g per deg C) is low and well known. The outer vessel and the gap between the walls cut heat exchange with the room, and the polished surface reduces radiation losses.
- Weigh the empty inner vessel with its stirrer, then add water and weigh again.
- Fit the inner vessel into the outer vessel, close the lid and insert a thermometer; note the starting temperature.
- Add the hot sample, for example metal shots from a steam heater, and close the lid.
- Stir gently with the wire loop stirrer and record the highest steady temperature.
- Apply heat lost = heat gained to find the unknown specific heat.
The same calorimeter serves for latent heat of fusion (adding dried ice to warm water), latent heat of vaporisation (passing steam into cold water) and simple demonstrations of energy conservation.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the calorimeter made of copper?
Copper is a good conductor with a low, well-known specific heat, so the vessel quickly shares the temperature of its contents and its own heat uptake is easy to correct for.
What experiments is the copper calorimeter used for?
Specific heat capacity of solids and liquids by the method of mixtures, latent heat of fusion and vaporisation, and demonstrations of conservation of energy.
What is the price of the Copper Calorimeter?
Prices are not published on the website. Add the Copper Calorimeter to the Enquiry Cart with the Add To Cart button on this page, or email [email protected] with the house code SCL-H-11208 and the quantity, to receive a quotation.
Does Lab Exports manufacture the Copper Calorimeter?
Yes. Lab Exports manufactures the Copper Calorimeter at its works at 11/315, Lalita Park, Laxmi Nagar, Delhi 110092, under house code SCL-H-11208.
