How the model is used in teaching
A two-stroke petrol engine fires once every revolution. On the upstroke the piston compresses the fuel-air charge in the cylinder while drawing a fresh charge from the carburettor into the crankcase below. A spark ignites the charge near the top; on the downstroke the piston first uncovers the exhaust port and then the transfer port, through which the mixture compressed in the crankcase flows up into the cylinder and pushes the burnt gas out.
