How the reflection experiment is done
The law of reflection has two parts: the incident ray, the reflected ray and the normal at the point of incidence all lie in the same plane, and the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. Both angles are measured from the normal, not from the mirror surface, which is the point students most often miss. The marked surface of the kit shows the normal and the angle scale together so the two readings can be taken directly.
- Place the kit on a clean, flat table and locate the central normal line and angle markings.
- Position the reflecting surface at the centre of the angle scale, at right angles to the normal line.
- Direct a narrow incident ray at the point where the normal meets the reflecting surface.
- Read the angle of incidence and the angle of reflection on the scale.
- Repeat for several angles and tabulate the pairs of readings.
Plotting angle of reflection against angle of incidence gives a straight line through the origin with a slope of one. The same layout is useful for drawing ray diagrams for practical records and for classroom demonstrations.
