Spot Reflecting

Spot Reflecting

Product Code : SCL-LAO-11132

Quick answer: The Spot Reflecting Galvanometer is a sensitive current detector that shows deflection as the movement of a light spot rather than a pointer, so very small currents and exact balance points can be seen. It is used as a null detector in Wheatstone bridge and potentiometer experiments. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for schools, colleges and universities.

How it is used

In a reflecting galvanometer, the current passes through a coil suspended in a magnetic field, and the coil carries a small mirror. A beam of light falls on the mirror and is reflected as a spot on a scale. When the coil turns through an angle theta, the reflected beam turns through 2 theta, and the long light path acts as a weightless pointer, so tiny deflections become easy to see.

This makes the instrument well suited to null methods. In a Wheatstone bridge, the unknown resistance is found when no current flows through the galvanometer, P/Q = R/S; in a potentiometer, the balance point is where the light spot stays at zero as the jockey touches the wire.

  1. Place the instrument on a stable, vibration-free surface.
  2. Set the light spot to the zero of the scale.
  3. Connect the galvanometer in the bridge or potentiometer circuit, with a protective shunt or high resistance in series at first.
  4. Adjust the circuit until the light spot shows no deflection, then remove the protection for the final balance.

Key features

  • Light-spot indication makes small deflections easy to see.
  • Suited to identifying null or balance conditions.
  • Spot movement shows the direction of imbalance where the configuration permits.
  • Supports Wheatstone bridge and potentiometer practicals.
  • Suited to school, college, university and vocational electrical laboratories.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a spot reflecting galvanometer show small deflections so clearly?

The light beam reflected from the moving mirror turns through twice the coil's angle and travels a long path to the scale, acting as a long, weightless pointer that magnifies small movements.

Which experiments use a spot reflecting galvanometer?

It is used as a null detector in Wheatstone bridge, metre bridge and potentiometer experiments, and for detecting very small currents.

What is the price of the spot reflecting galvanometer?
