How it is used
Electrical power is the rate at which energy is delivered to a load. In a DC circuit P = VI; in an AC circuit the average power is P = VI cos phi, where cos phi is the power factor. A wattmeter combines both quantities in one reading: its current circuit is connected in series with the load and its voltage circuit across it, so the deflection follows the product of the two.
- Check the voltage, current and power ranges of the wattmeter against the load.
- With the supply off, connect the current terminals in series with the load.
- Connect the voltage terminals across the load.
- Switch on and read the power from the scale; change the load, for example the number of lamps, and read again.
- Compare the wattmeter reading with the product of separate voltmeter and ammeter readings.
For a resistive load such as filament lamps the two results agree closely; with an inductive load the wattmeter reads less than V x I, which introduces the idea of power factor.
