Uses
A panel meter is built to sit in a cut-out in a panel or demonstration board rather than stand on the bench. Inside, a moving coil in a permanent magnet field turns against a spring by an angle proportional to the current, so the pointer gives a linear reading. With a suitable shunt it reads current as an ammeter; with a series multiplier resistor it reads voltage as a voltmeter.
Typical uses include power supply fronts, circuit trainers, demonstration boards and instrument panels in physics and electrical laboratories. The larger 85 mm scale and the mirror-scale variant suit readings taken to finer divisions: lining the pointer up with its reflection removes parallax error.
