How the Bernoulli theorem experiment is done
Bernoulli's theorem states that along a streamline of steady, incompressible flow the sum p + (1/2) rho v^2 + rho g h stays constant. In a horizontal tube the height term does not change, so wherever the water speeds up its pressure must fall. By continuity, A1 v1 = A2 v2, the water has to move faster through the narrowed centre of the Bernoulli tube, and the manometer there shows a lower water column than those before and after it.
The constant-bore gradient tube is the comparison. With the same bore along its length the speed is the same everywhere, and the three manometer levels fall steadily from inlet to outlet only because of friction losses. Running the two tubes one after the other separates the Bernoulli effect from ordinary pressure loss along a pipe.
- Fit a length of glass tubing to each side tube with the rubber connectors so that each forms a vertical manometer.
- Connect the inlet of the flow tube to a steady water supply at constant head and fit a swan-necked outlet at the far end.
- Let water run until the flow is steady and no air bubbles remain.
- Read the water level in the three manometer tubes and note the drop at the narrowed section.
- Repeat with the constant-bore gradient tube and compare the two sets of readings.
