Overflow Vessel (Eureka Can)
Product Code : EL-POM-10354
Quick answer: An overflow vessel, or Eureka can, collects the liquid displaced when an object is lowered into it, so the volume of the object and the upthrust on it can be measured. This one is made of G.I. sheet with a hammer-tone finish and a flared top edge for strength. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for schools, colleges and universities.

How the Archimedes experiment is done
Archimedes' principle states that a body wholly or partly immersed in a fluid experiences an upthrust equal to the weight of fluid it displaces. The Eureka can turns this into a measurement: once it is filled to the spout, any object lowered in pushes out exactly its own immersed volume of water, which is caught and weighed or measured.
- Stand the can on a level bench and fill it with water until it overflows from the spout; wait for the dripping to stop.
- Place a weighed beaker or measuring cylinder under the spout.
- Weigh the solid in air on a spring balance, then lower it fully into the water while it still hangs from the balance.
- Collect all the water that overflows and find its weight or volume.
- Compare the loss of weight of the solid with the weight of water collected.
The two values agree within experimental error, verifying the principle. The volume of water collected also gives the volume of an irregular solid, and dividing its mass by that volume gives its density.

Frequently asked questions
What is a Eureka can used for?
For measuring the volume of liquid displaced by a submerged object, to verify Archimedes' principle and to find the volume and density of irregular solids.
Why is the top edge of the overflow vessel flared?
The flared edge stiffens the rim of the sheet-metal vessel and adds strength.
