How the Hare's apparatus experiment is done
When air is drawn out through the short limb, the pressure above both liquid columns falls by the same amount, so both liquids rise until the pressure of each column balances that difference. The column pressures are then equal: h1 x rho1 x g = h2 x rho2 x g. The relative density of one liquid with respect to the other is therefore rho1 / rho2 = h2 / h1.
- Fit a rubber tube and pinch cock to the short limb.
- Dip the two long limbs into beakers holding water and the test liquid.
- Suck gently through the rubber tube and close the pinch cock when the columns are well up the scale.
- Read the height of each column above the liquid surface in its beaker.
- Release and repeat at different heights; the ratio h2 / h1 should stay the same.
With water as one of the liquids, the ratio gives the relative density of the other directly. Because only column heights are measured, no balance is needed.
