How the cubes are used
A cube has the easiest volume of any solid to measure: V = a^3, from a single side length a. Students measure the side with vernier callipers, weigh the cube and divide mass by volume to find density. Comparing cubes of different metals shows at once that equal volumes of different materials have very different masses.
- Measure the side of the cube in several places and take the mean.
- Weigh the cube in air; the hook version can hang directly from the balance.
- Weigh it again while fully immersed in water.
- Calculate specific gravity as weight in air divided by loss of weight in water.
The specific gravity found by weighing in water can be compared with the density from the measured dimensions, a useful check on experimental error.
