How it is used
In a spot galvanometer the coil hangs on a taut suspension instead of pivots, so there is no bearing friction. A small mirror on the coil reflects light from the built-in lamp onto the scale, and the light beam acts as a long, weightless pointer: a very small current gives a deflection that can be read clearly. The movement is damped against sideways vibration of the suspension without changing its electrical behaviour.
