How the Searle's method experiment is done

Young's modulus is the ratio of tensile stress to tensile strain, Y = (F/A)/(l/L) = MgL/(pi r^2 l), where M is the load, L the original length of the wire, r its radius and l the extension. In Searle's arrangement two identical wires hang side by side from the ceiling bracket. The reference wire carries the constant weight and stays taut, so any sag of the support or change of temperature affects both wires equally and cancels out.

The experimental wire carries a hanger with slotted weights. As it stretches, its frame drops relative to the reference frame and the spirit level on the pivoted link tilts; turning the micrometer until the bubble is central again gives the extension directly.

1. Hang both wires from the ceiling bracket, fit the frames and load each with enough weight to make it straight.
2. Measure the length L of the experimental wire and its diameter at several points with a screw gauge.
3. Level the spirit level with the micrometer and note the zero reading.
4. Add slotted weights in equal steps, relevelling and recording the micrometer reading each time; repeat while unloading.
5. Plot load against extension; the slope gives M/l for the Young's modulus formula.
