How it is used

In the capillary rise method the capillary tube is held fixed, and the beaker of liquid has to be brought up to it, held steady while the column settles, and then lowered again without disturbing the tube. The rising table does this job: the beaker stands on the 4 inch cast aluminium table, and the adjustable stand raises or lowers it up to 12 inches.

The table also helps with the height measurement. A common technique is to set a pointed pin with its tip just touching the liquid surface, read the top of the meniscus in the capillary with a travelling microscope, then lower the table, remove the beaker and read the tip of the pin. The difference of the two readings is the capillary rise h, used in T = r h rho g/2 for water in clean glass.

1. Mount the capillary tube in the clamp so that it hangs vertically above the table.
2. Place a clean beaker of the liquid on the rising table and raise it until the tube dips into the liquid.
3. Let the column settle, then read the top of the meniscus with a travelling microscope.
4. Lower the table, remove the beaker and take the reference reading at the liquid-surface mark.
5. Subtract the readings to find the capillary rise and calculate the surface tension.
