Manganin Wire (100gm)

Manganin Wire (100gm)

Product Code : SCL-EAE-11246

Quick answer: Manganin Wire (100 g) is a resistance wire for physics practicals where a steady resistance is needed. Its resistance changes very little with temperature, so it is used for resistivity experiments, resistance-versus-length studies and for winding resistance coils and standards. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for schools, colleges and universities.

Uses

Manganin is a copper-manganese-nickel alloy with a very small temperature coefficient of resistance, so a length of manganin wire keeps practically the same resistance while the current warms it slightly. That is why it is the usual choice for standard resistors and for the coils inside resistance boxes and bridges.

  1. Choose the wire gauge the experiment requires.
  2. Inspect the wire for kinks or surface damage and straighten it.
  3. Measure the required length with a metre scale and cut it cleanly.
  4. Clamp the wire between terminals in a low-voltage circuit and measure its diameter with a screw gauge.
  5. Record voltage and current, then calculate R = V/I and the resistivity rho = R A / L.

Repeating the readings for several lengths gives a straight-line graph of R against L, confirming that the resistance of a uniform wire is proportional to its length.

Frequently asked questions

Why is manganin wire used for standard resistances?

Its resistance changes very little with temperature, so a manganin coil keeps its value during use. This makes it suitable for resistance boxes, bridges and standard resistors.

What gauge is the manganin wire?

The gauge, diameter and length per pack are not listed on this page. State the gauge needed when emailing [email protected].
