How it is used
In a decade box each dial selects one of ten steps, and each dial works in steps ten times larger than the one before it. Because the decades are connected in series, the resistance between the terminals is simply the sum of the dial settings, so a value can be read straight off the dials without adding up plugs.
The dial type is convenient wherever the resistance has to be changed often during an experiment: setting the series resistance in Ohm's law and characteristic-curve practicals, balancing a bridge, or finding the resistance needed when converting a galvanometer into an ammeter or voltmeter.
