How it is used

In bridge and potentiometer experiments the galvanometer lead is connected to the jockey, and the jockey is touched onto the bare resistance wire to test each point. The student presses it down briefly, watches the galvanometer, lifts it and tries again a little further along, closing in on the point of zero deflection.

The jockey should be pressed and lifted rather than dragged along the wire. Sliding it while pressed scrapes the wire, changes its cross-section and upsets the uniform resistance per centimetre on which the balancing-length calculation depends. The locating notch helps keep the contact on the wire at the chosen scale mark.

Frequently asked questions

Which instruments is the pencil jockey used with?

It is used with meter bridges (slide-wire Wheatstone bridges) and with all types of potentiometers, to locate the null point on the wire.

How should a jockey be used on a bridge wire?

Press it lightly onto the wire and lift it again at each trial point. Do not slide it while pressed, as this damages the wire and makes its resistance per centimetre non-uniform.
