Resistance Substitution Box

Resistance Substitution Box

Product Code : EL-EAE-10283

Quick answer: The Resistance Substitution Box contains 12 radio-type resistors at standard preferred values, covering 100 ohms to 470 kilo-ohms, each selected through its own terminal against a common connection. It lets students try different resistances in a circuit quickly without soldering. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for schools, colleges and universities.

How it is used

A substitution box is a quick way to find the resistor value a circuit needs. One lead goes to the common terminal and the other is moved from terminal to terminal, putting each of the 12 resistors into the circuit in turn. The student watches the effect, on a meter reading, a lamp, the gain of an amplifier or the bias of a transistor, and settles on the value that works before fitting a permanent component.

Because the resistors are standard preferred values, the chosen value can be bought and fitted directly. The box is also useful for the substitution method of measurement, where an unknown resistance in a circuit is replaced by a known one that gives the same meter reading.

  1. Connect one circuit lead to the common terminal of the box.
  2. Connect the other lead to the terminal of the first value to be tried.
  3. Switch on and note the circuit's behaviour or meter reading.
  4. Move the lead to other terminals until the required result is obtained, then note the value.

Key features

  • 12 resistors spanning 100 ohms to 470 kilo-ohms
  • Standard preferred values, so the chosen value is easy to source
  • Simple selection through individual terminals and a common connection
  • Radio-type resistors suited to electronics and circuit work
  • Saves repeated soldering when trying values in student circuits
